Recent Advances in Aquaculture Research & Fisheries

Prof. S. K. Das, M.Sc., Ph. D. in Zoology has been in research work on aquaculture and fisheries since 1987. He is serving as a University Faculty for the last 24 years and presently working as Professor and Head, Department of Aquaculture, Faculty of Fishery Sciences, West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Prof. Das has started his research career as Junior Research Fellow of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Govt. of India and subsequently as Senior Research Fellow and Research Associate of the said august Council. He has also been awarded Visiting Fellowship from the Science and Engineering Research Council, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India during 2000 as a Post Doctoral Fellow. He has been awarded Ph. D. degree from the University of Kalyani, Kalyani, West Bengal, India during the year 1993.

In-situ remediation of aquaculture wastewater through microbial manipulation based on zero water exchange techniques; transitional changes in the management practices of composite carp farming during the course of last five decades and potential of phyto-piscicides in prestocking management of carp culture ponds.

Cho Yong Kil / Glen Cho has completed his bachelor’s degree of Veterinary Medicine at Seoul National University in 1984. He did Administrative Course in Fishery, Aquaculture and Environment in Fishery Venture College and Graduated at Agriculture & Fishery Trade College. After graduation he launched his career as a Technical Specialist in Qingdao Ami Aquaculture, Inc., Technical Advisor in Amishrimp Co., Ltd., Technical Administrator in Aquaculture Development Co., Ltd., Manager Ami Intensive Indoor Shrimp Training Center for past 3 years and as a CEO in Bio Resource International Co for past 19 years from 1999. He has also been associated in Technical Evaluation Committee of Koreas Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST) and in Technical Review Board of Korea Institute of Planning and Evaluation Technology in food, Agriculture for past 8 years.

Dr Atul Kumar Singh a Ph.D. in Zoology from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in 1981 pursued 36 year long Scientific career from different organizations in different capacities. Superannuated recently as Director of a National Research Institute ICAR-DCFR under central sector where coordinated and monitored R&D activities of Himalayan States of the Country. At present serving as Emeritus Scientist at ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow. Developed a tool for Risk Assessment and Impact Assessment (RAIA) of introduced fish species for risks and impacts quantification and decision support; National Plan and Strategic Guidelines on Import of Alien Fish Species. Published over 247 research papers in peer reviewed International and National journals of repute and also ten books. Besides, he also successfully guided over a dozen of Ph.Ds of different universities monitored research activities at the Institute level and also in collaboration. Completed over 28 research projects and monitored several other inter-institutional and institutional research programmes. Conferred with several prestigious Awards such as S. Z. Quasin Gold Medal, Dutta Munshi Gold Medal, Eminent Indian Zoologist and also Fellowship awards of several Professional Societies/organizations.

Contributed immensely to the fields: (i) Fishery resource management and sustainable development; (ii) responsible fishery and biodiversity conservation; (iii) Impact Assessment of Introduced Fish Species (IAIFS) for responsible aquaculture (iv) Sex Control of important aquaculture fish species using biotechnological tools for reproductive containment and production of monosex population for aquaculture and ecological security.

Ir. Dr. Sohiful Anuar Zainol Murad was born in Kedah, Malaysia in 1975. He received the B.Eng degree in Electronic Engineering from Saga University, Japan, in 2000, the Master of Science in Electronic Systems Design Engineering from the Malaysia Science University, Malaysia in 2004 and PhD in electronics from Kyushu University, Japan in 2011. In 2000, he was with the industries of SGTi Globetronic Technology (M) Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia as QA engineer and Sharp-Roxy Corporation (M) Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia as R&D engineer for almost 3 years. In 2003, he moved to Universiti Malaysia Perlis. Currently he is a senior lecturer in the School of Microelectronic Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Malaysia. In addition, he is a member of Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and a Charted Engineer.

His research interests include electronic circuits design and smart aquaponics system development. He has over 80 publications including journals and proceedings published in SCOPUS and five academic books.

Dr. Jericardo S. Mondragon is a graduate from Cavite State University, where he received Bachelor of Science in Fisheries. After graduation, he launched his career in Manila, where he began his works in capture fisheries. He continued his graduate studies in the Far Eastern University and completed the Master in Business Administration Major in Management. Later he pursued his postgraduate studies and became Doctor of Fisheries Technology Major in Marine Fisheries Management and Technology from the Iloilo State College of Fisheries, Philippines. He has 35 years of experience in array of services on fisheries related fields. DR. Jericardo Salceda Mondragon is the acting Center Chief of the National Mariculture Center, first of its kind in the Philipines located at Panabo City in the province of Davao del Norte, Philippines. He is the current National President of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Employees Union of the Philippines Inc. (BFAR-EU) since 2005 and a professor at Cavite State University-Open Learning College since 2009 up to present.

Khalid Memon is the Founder and CEO of Aquaculture Technologies Pakistan, which is a consultancy and service company, focused on the application of various technologies to improve productivity, efficiency and sustainability in aquaculture and aquaponics throughout Pakistan, Middle East and Africa. He has a Bachelor degree in Commerce and a Bachelor of Science degree in Freshwater Biology and Fisheries. He has 30 years experience in all aspects of Aquaculture which includes over 17 years hands-on. He strongly believes in Go Green and sustainability and is familiar with Alternate Feeds, Probiotics, Compost Tea, Worm Tea fertilizers, Effective Microorganisms Bokashi Probiotic liquid, Eco Enzymes and Duckweed Production systems. He has worked Pro Bono as Task Force Member, Aquaculture, Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture & Livestock, MINFAL, Islamabad, 2005 to 2013 and Pro Bono as Member, Agriculture Facilities Board and Credit Extension, Govt. of Sindh from 2000 to 2005, training over 300 farmers on pond management and towards poverty alleviation. He has provided extensive consultancy services for various projects in Pakistan and International projects in UAE, Yemen, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Sri Lanka, Malawi, Mauritania, Maldives, Qatar and Zambia.

Species include Tilapia, Asian sea bass Barramundi, Pangasius, L vannamei white leg shrimp, Freshwater prawns M rosenbergii and malcolmsonii, P monodon Tiger prawns, African catfish Magur, Carps, Catfish Seenghala and Snakeheads.

ANDRZEJ MAMCARZ - Professor of Fisheries, Doctor of Natural Sciences. Born in Szczecin (26 May 1950). In 1974 graduated with the award at Faculty of Water Protection & Inland Fisheries, Academy of Agriculture & Technology in Olsztyn. Qualified as Master of Science in Fisheries after defending the master thesis entitled "Distribution of fish fry in Siemiany Bay of Lake Jeziorak". Qualified as D. Sc. in 1983 at the same Faculty after defending doctoral thesis entitled "Variability of biometric features in peled (Coregonus peled Gmelin 1788) during culturing in lake cages". Qualified as Associate Professor in Fisheries in 1991 at Faculty of Marine Fisheries, Szczecin Agricultural University after evaluation scientific activity and defending thesis on "Conditions for growth of Coregonus peled larvae in cage rearing". Professor of Fisheries from 1998. Dean of the Faculty of Water Protection & Inland Fisheries in 1993-1996. Specialized in larviculture and lake fishery. The author over 300 publications, chapters in books and scripts for students. Dr. Said Elshahat Abdallah is working as a Professor of Agricultural Process Engineering, Department of Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, Kafrelsheikh University, Egypt. He was born on January 6, 1972. He obtained his Ph. D. degree in Technical Sciences in November 2005 from the Faculty of Design, Don State Technical University, Russia. He prepared many scientific literatures such as Engineering of Food Factories and Dairy Plants, Engineering Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, introduction to agricultural process engineering, Instrumentation, Properties and Testing of Engineering Materials, Fitting of Curves and Differential Equations and Differentiation & Integration, etc… He published more than thirty research articles in international peerreviewed journals. He supervised, has done and examined about twenty M. Sc. and Ph. D. dissertations. He participated in several either local or international conferences on the topics of Agricultural Process Engineering. Dr. Vaitheeswaran Thiruvengadam has over 96 substantial publications, including 34 papers in international peer-reviewed publications, 24 National peer-reviewed papers, 12 international conference papers 13 co-edited book, monographs, and training manual, 3 reviewed chapter, 201 external report in English and Tamil newspaper report, and he have been new records of finfish and shellfish species of marine invertebrate species of 68 numbers were reported for the first time in Indian coast, Indo-West Pacific coast of Gulf of Mannar, India.

Gianluca Ragusa is an International Independent consultant - Fisheries and aquaculture specialist. He has 27 years’ post-graduate experience in marine and inland aquatic resources sustainable and equitable development and management, in Africa, Caribbean, Europe, Mediterranean, and South East Asia. Robert Tsutsu has completed has Bachelor’s in Fisheries Science on 20th August 2018 from Mzuzu University and He will be graduating 2019. He is current working on designing an enhance market facility for fresh fish in Malawi as a platform for providing an organized market for fishers and fish farmers. The new facility is aim at address sanitation and hygiene in local markets which critical problem. He presented the concept at Pan African Fish and Fisheries Association (PAFFA 6) in 2018 and amongst 10 finalists of Agrilinks Young Blog Post Contest.

Robert Bob Tsutsu his expertise in fisheries economic, science and passion in strengthen fishery value chain to reduce poverty, improve livelihood and food and nutrition security for the local people. His study was to measure and suggestion on how to improve the value chain of one the most popular local fish species which most consumed by the local people in Malawi. He adopted three phase approach on food value chain by FAO. The measuring of social, economic and environmental performances of value chain.
